PAYING WITH PRE-TAX FUNDS

HSA and FSA, in plain English

Supplements are not automatically eligible. Read the rule before you try to pay.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A supplement may qualify only in a specific medical situation.

The IRS says nutritional supplements may count when a medical practitioner recommends them to treat a specific condition diagnosed by a physician. General wellness use does not qualify.

01

Ask your plan

Your HSA or FSA administrator decides what proof it requires and whether it will reimburse the purchase.

02

Ask your clinician

A Letter of Medical Necessity explains the diagnosed condition, the recommended item, and the expected length of use.

03

Keep the records

Save the letter, receipt, product details, and any answer from your plan administrator.

04

Expect a possible no

A letter does not guarantee approval. Cysta cannot decide eligibility for your plan.
